What to Bring to Boulia Camel Races: The ultimate packing guide for your Outback adventure!
Every July, the small Outback Queensland town of Boulia comes alive with the thunder of (camel) hooves, cheers of spectators, and the uniquely wild spirit of the Boulia Camel Races! Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or a first-time visitor, prepping for this iconic three-day event requires more than just a ticket and a hat (thought these are definitely the essentials).
Here’s your complete guide on what to pack to make the most of your Boulia Camel Races experience.
Camping Essentials (Because you’re in the Outback)
With FREE on-site camping for 10 days at the event, you don’t need to worry about where to pitch up – but the outback weather doesn’t mess around. Temperatures can swing from blazing hot days to cold, dry nights.
Tent, swag, or caravan – Choose your level of comfort, but make sure your gear can handle dust and wind.
Sleeping bag & extra blankets – Nights can be cold, potentially dropping well below 10°C overnight.
Camp chairs & table – For fireside stories and racetrack viewing.
Headlamp or torch – There’s very little ambient light once the sun goes down! Enjoy the outback night skies, but have your pocket light to get around.
Power bank or solar charger – Electricity can be limited.

Outback Apparel (Dress for sun, dust & fun)
The Boulia Camel Races are dusty by day, cool by night, and potentially windy – dress accordingly!
Wide-brim hat – Essential for sun protection and a bit of outback flair.
Sunglasses & sunscreen – Even in the cold, the UV index is no joke out here.
Comfortable boots or sneakers – You’ll be on your feet cheering on the camels, appropriate protective footwear is a must.
Layers – Pack lightweight clothes for the day and warm layers for the evenings.
Costume – There’s no set theme, but fancy dress is encouraged at Saturday’s festivities! Think fun, quirky, or country-style!

Food, Drinks & Cooking
There’s a great range of food vendors and a licensed bar at the event, and your local convenience stores in town for essential but if you prefer to self-cater:
Esky & ice blocks – Stock up on your way to Boulia (we re commend Mount Isa or Winton)
BBQ or camp stove – Fire pits are allowed and some firewood provided, but best to bring some with you if possible so you’re well supplied for your stay.
Snacks & easy meals – Keep it simple; you’ll be busy enjoying the races!
Coffee setup – Mornings are better with a brew under the wide outback sky.
Reusable water bottle – Hydration is crucial in the dry heat.

For the Memories
Camera or smartphone – Camel racing makes for some amazing photos.
Binoculars – Get a closer view of the race action and surrounding landscapes!

Bonus Items for Extra Fun
Fold-up shade or gazebo – Complete your set up in the campsite and settle in for the fun.
Portable speaker – For campsite tunes (keep volume respectful).
Games or cards – Great for downtime with mates.
Event program & schedule – Printed copies available from the Merch tent or view online. Keep track of all the races, live music, fireworks and activities.

Final Tips
Fuel up before you arrive. There’s a petrol station in town, but Boulia is remote – make sure your vehicle’s topped up.
Bring cash. EFTPOS is available but connectivity can be spotty. Best to have some cash on hand.
Respect the land. Leave no trace, take your rubbish, and look after the beautiful outback and our town!
