Boulia Camel Races on the home stretch to July!

BOULIA CAMEL RACES 2023 - SUNDAY 16.07.2023 - Matt Williams - WEB RES-1106

Amidst a tough time for events around the country with many recent announcements of cancellations, the tiny town of Boulia in Outback Queensland is racing down the track to the Boulia Camel Races in July!

Boulia Camel Races are held annually in July, with this year’s event set to take place from 12 – 14 July 2024. Event attendees are able to take advantage of onsite camping for up to 10 nights in Boulia, included free with race entry passes.

Located at the edge of the Simpson Desert, the population of Boulia balloons from 300 locals to almost 3,000 people during the races. Featuring the longest camel race in Australia, Boulia Camel Races is popularly known as the ‘Melbourne Cup of Camel Races’ and is a staple on the Australian camel racing calendar for jockeys and enthusiasts alike.

"We're so excited again to be welcoming everyone back to the Boulia Camel Races this year for our 27th event. Volunteering at this event for over 17 years, and over the past few years as President, I've experienced first hand the growth of the event and the incredible impact it has for both our community and visitors. We get visitors travelling thousands of kilometers to join us," says local resident and President, Shelley Lorensen. "You just gotta make it to this year's Boulia Camel Races, it's an event and location like nowhere else. Trust us, you won't regret it!"

The event’s biggest races, the Better Beer Cup, is the most prestigious event to win at the races and offers the biggest prize money in camel racing in Australia. Boulia Camel Races is two days of professional camel racing with bookies by the trackside, music in the evenings and campfires lit up at every campsite for long yarns at the end of the day.

The 2024 entertainment lineup for Boulia Camel Races is jam packed with some of Queensland country music’s favourite new stars. Will Day, Josie, and The 78 Sound are ready to hit the stage and keep attendees kicking up the dust till the late hours. QLD event staples The Crack-up Sisters will also be on hand to get everyone involved in a series of novelty races, taking place on the track between the camel races.

The journey out to Boulia is all part of the adventure, with Boulia located roughly four hours west of Winton, four hours north of Birdsville and four hours south of Mount Isa. Boulia may not be too close to anywhere, but it’ll be the only place to be from 12 – 14 July! It’s the mysterious land of the Min Min lights and even to this day, travellers and locals every year report sightings of the strange phenomenon.
